Zachary and Ashley Wenke live in the last Montezuma home before Barnes City, right where the "Welcome to Barnes City" sign sits. Many would argue it IS Barnes City. In 2017, they purchased those seven acres with hopes of fixing up the little house, having some animals, and starting a u-pick orchard.
As of 2019, we are happy to be offering honey, whole fryer chickens, and eggs. We have a Dexter cow/calf is used for milk, and 5 pigs that are escape artists. There's 80 fruit trees, a strawberry patch, and asparagus planted for the years to come.
In addition to managing the homestead, Zachary works at Vermeer full-time as a Engineer and Ashley combines an plethora of jobs to keep herself busy, which include taking care of the baby, operating the Montezuma Food Pantry, teaching on VIPKID, and other contract work.
We started this adventure to be able to provide food for ourselves and extend our love for eating homegrown food to the local community.
